It looks like they may have addressed the problems with the early stocks, as what they were using back when I got mine, were poorly done over USGI stocks. Of the three, irons, red dot, or scope, I preferred the red dot. DONT touch that steel rail when the gun is hot! They sit low and are made of aluminum and shed head rapidly, staying cool enough to touch when the gun is hot. If I were for some reason to get another, Id ditch their rail, and go with one of the Ultimak rails. It also sits higher than it should for natural shooting, and puts the optic higher than is optimal/comfortable. I used both Aimpoints and a Leupold Scout scope on mine, and while it didnt seem to affect them, I often wondered how they might have held up to constant use like that.
Hot enough you could see the mirage coming off it. The rail is/was also made of steel, that got VERY HOT when shooting, especially when you shot quickly. My mounts (mostly ARMS and LaRue) that were Picatinny, would either not go on the rail at all, or would not lock down tight on it, if they did. The one on my gun wasnt, although their CS swore up and down it was. My standard models 100 click settings were around 8-10, my Bush models was around 14, and the SOCOM was around 22. Youll get more out of the gun that way.Īlso bear in mind, your "click" count will be a lot different than the standard models, due to the shorter barrels. Personally, Id put a set of the standard sights on it if you want iron sights. The XS sights are meant for close-range shooting and trying to be precise at 100 yards or so, can be a real chore.

They are a bit handier, but still just about as heavy as a full sized gun. What they are, is an M1A, thats had 6" of barrel lopped off. The good thing about my SOCOM was, it was accurate. Just one of those gotta have things I guess.įrom about the mid 90's on, some of what they were turning out and their QC and CS were a bit questionable to downright crap. I bought a SOCOM when they first came out, and really dont know why either, as I was having a lot of issues with a number of their handguns about the same time. Ive owned M1A's with all three barrel lengths, and used to shoot a couple in matches back in the late 80's and much of the 90's. Ill just preface things with this, after a roughly 20 year hiatus from Springfield, when I swore Id never buy another, I broke down and bought one of their 1911 mil-spec Defender models, and it appears nothing has really changed. My only problem I see with this is.where the heck did I put the original mag catches?! LOL. Both have always functioned 100%, are plenty accurate, with the full sized wood stock model literally oozing that old school wood and metal charm.įor legality while living in NY I had to make the magazines on both of these rifles "non removable" with a static insert that took the place of the original mag catch, and I'm embarassed to admit that they're still installed in both rifles along with 10 round mags! I suppose it's about time that I did something about that since I only moved here to NC about 4 years or so ago where no such restrictions exist. To finish it off I have a USGI NM flash hider that I'd like to swap out with the muzzle brake that came with the rifle to round out the "shorter but still original" look. So the rifle sits as received as I patiently await coming across a deal on a walnut stock along with a "normal" (as in: without the cutout for the long eye relief scope) fiberglass handguard for it.
A short time later I found a Scout Squad model with the black crinkle finish synthetic stock the rifle's great but I'm not particularly fond of the stock, which although rigid and not affected by weather conditions, I prefer wood stocks on these rifles. It's got an original birch M14 stock that has all kinds of character.a filled in gouge repair along with numerous dents and scars, and of course it's got that special "smell" to it. I own two.a full sized rifle that was built from a parts kit on what SA reported to be sold as a bare receiver.
